Ever had something stuck in your mind and it won't stop? Here are a few things that have been stuck in mine.
Lyrics:
Bon Jovi is one of my favorite groups. Very often when I am puttering around the house I will put in one of their CD's. The other day I choose Crossroads, a CD with 14 of their biggest hits. One song that I have listened to countless times, caught my attention. I had to stop what I was doing, go back and listen to Someday I'll Be Saturday Night. 1 line in the song has been stuck in my head since then:
"Hey my name is Jim, where did I go wrong, my life's a bargin basement all the good s**t's gone...."
I find myself walking around the house, singing that one line. Over and over. Last night, my son, The Baby, caught me in mid lyric. Even then I couldn't stop and continued. He gave me one of those wondering looks that silently asks the question: Why isn't she in the "nervous hospital?"
Not long ago it was a line from, Last Dance For Mary Jane:
"Well she grew up in an Indiana town, had a good lookin' mama, that never was around, but she grew up tall and she grew up right, with those Indiana boys on an Indiana night...."
I think that lasted for about 4 days.
SONGS:
Very often I will hear a song and fall in love with it on the spot. It will speak to me, triggering my obsessive button. When that happens, I rush right out and buy it, then listen over and over until what ever weird thing it is inside me that causes this to happen seems satisfied.
The first time I remember that happening was,Take It To The Limit by The Eagles. As you know, that is my favorite song in the whole world.
Another time it was a little known Elvis song called, Just Pretend. Back in the early 90's, I bought a video called, Lost Performances, that featured clips of Elvis in concert, filmed while making 2 concert movies. One titled, This Is Elvis and the other, Elvis In Concert. The songs on Lost Performances didn't make the final cut. After hearing this song, I was obsessed with finding it.
In March of 2004, it was a song by a new artist, Jimmy Wayne, called, Stay Gone. This was during a rather dark period, emotionally and mentally in my life. The lyrics, melody and delivery spoke to me. I remember one night, sitting in the dining room with all the lights off, candles burning, listening to it over and over. Each time I hear it now, I go back to that night.
"Baby, baby, stay. Stay right where you are. I like it this way. It's good for my heart. I haven't felt like this, in God knows how long. I know everythings gonna be okay, if you just stay, gone."
The most recent was, Through The Fire. A gospel song by The Crabb Family, featuring the awesome vocals of Jason Crabb.
Movies:
There are times when I become obsessed with certain movies. I can't tell you why, because I don't know. Once I have them,it is not unusual for me to watch them back to back. And sometimes to back, again.
The very first one was Smokey And The Bandit. Even though I saw this movie about 10 times at the theater when it came out. Once, I had it on video, I would watch it at least once a week. Sometimes more.
Then there was:
Coal Miner's Daughter. During my singing days, it became a running joke with another group we often traveled and performed with that I could recite the whole thing by heart. The drummer of the group, knew the film almost as well as I did. Wasn't unusual for him to come up to me and recite one of Tommy Lee Jones's (Doolittle) and for me to follow with a Sissy Spacek (Loretta) line. One night while standing out in the parking lot in Marietta,Georgia, waiting for the bus to be loaded, we did the entire motel room "morning after" scene. One of my favorite lines from the movie is when Doo says to Loretta:
"Hell's bells, Loretta! Do you think this is something the rest of the world ain't caught on to yet. They don't give a s**t."
"Hell's bells, Loretta", worked it's way into my speech. When I was working in Dalton,Georgia, my employees got a kick out of hearing me say that.
Then we have, Bridges Of Madison County. I first fell in love with the book. Robert James Waller is an AMAZING writer. I cried through the entire last portion of the book. Then the movie came along. A movie, I can't and refuse to watch with anyone. Even as many times as I have watched it, I still break down and go into the "ugly cry".
One line from the book and movie touched me so deeply and I quoted it so often that a good friend once said to me:
"My God woman! Did you write the damn book? Were you in the movie? What is your obsession with this!!!!"
It's gone on so long that now, I don't even have to say the line, I'll just say, "Bridges", or if I am writing, "Insert Bridges quote", and everyone knows what I mean. For those of you that don't know, here it is:
"I've never said this before, and I'll only say it once, but, this kind of certainty, comes but once in a lifetime."
Another movie I watched more times than I can count is The Temptations. This made for TV movie was based on the book by founding member Otis Williams. There is even a web site devoted to fans of the movie, that includes a quiz to see if you are obsessed with it. I took it and passed. Even though, a couple of the answers to the questions were wrong. I sent an email to the owner of the site pointing out the errors. Didn't hear back and it wasn't changed. Not being able to let it go, I sent an email to one of the stars, Terron Brooks, through his web site. I mean, he was in the movie, certainly he could verify that I was right, which he did.
So, here is the question. What gets stuck in your mind? A song, lyric, movie....tell me....I want to know!
Later Ya'll...^Belle^
